Kasich Told NH Town Hall Attendee “You’re Going To Have Get Over” Reduced Social Security Payment. According to UPI, “During a ‘Fiscal Fridays’ event in New Hampshire, Ohio Gov. John Kasich told an audience member to ‘get over’ his proposed reforms to Social Security. During the event, the Republican presidential candidate said a balanced budget cannot be had without reform to entitlements like Social Security. He later said he was part of a 1990s effort to reform Medicare and Medicaid and that he sought to minimize benefits for individuals not yet near the eligible age.
Kasich asked audience members not yet near the eligible age for Social Security payments to raise their hand. He then asked if they knew what their initial payment would be and asked if they would mind a slightly lower payment for the benefit of the whole country. When one individual said they would mind, Kasich jokingly said ‘you’re going to have get over it.’ The remark drew laughs from the audience and moderator.” [UPI, 10/10/15]

Get real, people. Kasich is right. There ultimately will have to be some reductions in Social Security, but there also needs to be a significant increase in the amouint of income subject to the Social Security tax.

When the lovely GOP list of candidates first stood on the stage and started their spiels, I said to my husband, Kasich will rise above the rest of them because he speaks in a smooth, reasonable way and has a lot of experience, both in Washington and as Ohio’s governor. My son has lived in Ohio more than 20 years and says ‘he’s awful, he’s really bad!’ so I have been watching for some type of overview from Ohio residents to give me an idea of the real guy. Well, you gave it to me. Why do they always think that our money that has gone to Social Security, Unemployment insurance, or retirement policies is free money to be tapped whenever a perceived short fall is found. I can’t go to your wallet and take out money every time I think I need something. It’s the same thing. What’s in your wallet is yours!!! So, folks. I wasn’t planning to vote for Kasich but was feeling at least someone on the GOP stage had some scruples and some knowledge of the real world. All that doesn’t matter if he has outlandish ideas and an over the top passion against a woman’s right to choose. Sorry, John Kasich. Social Security can be saved if the GOP decided to lift the income cap on taxes of funds needed to save social security. The reason they will not is because businesses also would be paying more into social security. The GOP wants to raise the age to get social security to 70. This way people who paid into it will die within ten years instead 20 to 25. They also want you to have you pay in to the stock market. Like we are suppose to trust wall street on not screwing us over. To the GOP no thank you.

Social security is not an entitlement. We have paid into Social Security for the right to have our benefit. Entitlements are such things as welfare etc.

An entitlement is a government program guaranteeing access to some benefit by members of a specific group and based on established rights or by legislation.
But I leap to repeat what some here and millions more around the country do not understand: SOC.SC. IS NOT AN ENTITLEMENT!!!! It is right and proper to help sustain SS by increasing the limits or to increase the SS tax but it is NOT proper to cut the payments. The SS program as specifically drawn to avoid making it a welfare program.
Not an “entitlement”, asshole! The Social Security Wage needs to be increased over the next five years to at least $250,000. Maybe, as someone proposed, to $400,000. It’s a bit aggravating that I paid as much into SS in the last few years as Trump and Romney. Which pension system is this guy on?
I think when you hear social security reform, you think your benefits will be cut. I’m not thinking that way, I’m thinking of reforming SSI and getting the freeloaders out of the system..The other point is why don’t we raise income tax for social security by 1 or 2% more? I’m sure that would solve any questions of solvency. One of the posters is correct. Our government “borrowed” the money out of the fund and is obligated to pay it back. Try reading his actual remarks before going apeshit. On Medicaid is said he proposed “cuts to Medicare that would slow the growth rate ” – the growth rate, not entitlement. Same with Social Security, the inflation adjustment mechanism needs to change. As someone in his 50’s, I am not expecting to have the same benefits or terms as the first recipients did. The money has to come from somewhere, and a little rejiggering here and there is needed to keep this going. Try starting with taking the income cap off of the withholding tax first.

Q many seniors are on food stamps because of their low income. In New York City you have to pay your income over $825 every month to get Medicaid. Stop blaming the poor, it’s the rich who get “welfare.”

On what planet do you live? Kasich will cut Social Security and Medicare. As he is so fond of saying, “In Ohio,” he cut funding to public schools while increasing funding for vouchers for private schools (he has 2 daughters that attend private schools). He cut to the bone funding for Planned Parenthood. He’s hung up on the abortion issue, totally blind to the majority of the programs PP offers. When he was first elected, he pushed through the legislature a bill that cut unions and collective bargaining for all public employees (police officers, firefighters, nurses, teachers, etc.). The voters of the state soundly repealed that bill with a referendum that passed in 86 of 88 counties. He brags about balancing the budget “in Ohio.” Well, Kasich, you are required by state law to balance the budget. Every governor that preceded you also balanced the budget. I’ve met Kasich. He is arrogant and a snob. Workers pay in to both SS and Medicare. It’s their money, not the government’s. Kasich – keep your grubby paws off both!
