Kabul Airport Attack Kills 13 U.S. Service Members, at Least 90 Afghans!

Two explosions ripped through crowds seeking evacuation, followed by an assault by Islamic State gunmen

More than 100 people were killed, including at least 13 U.S. service members and 90 Afghans, at the Kabul airport Thursday when two blasts ripped through crowds trying to enter the American-controlled facility, disrupting the final push of the U.S.-led evacuation effort.

A suicide bomb attack at the airport’s Abbey Gate was followed by an assault by gunmen, officials said. Another bomb attack took place nearby, at a hotel outside the airport, officials said. Eighteen U.S. service members were injured, the Pentagon said.

The attack marked the deadliest day for the U.S. military in Afghanistan since 2011, and came just five days before the Biden administration’s deadline for the complete military withdrawal from the country. Which Brings Us To The Afghanistan Papers…

As part of a government project to understand what went wrong, a federal agency interviewed more than 400 people who had a direct role in the conflict. In those interviews, generals, ambassadors, diplomats and other insiders offered firsthand accounts of the mistakes that have prolonged the war. General Michael Flynn started this project when he filed an IG report showing that the Pentagon was lying about the war. Now you know why they wanted General Flynn silenced and far away from President Trump.

Due to the blunders of this administration with all hell breaking loose in Afghanistan, the emergence of these papers and the naming of names is not by coincidence. Something is about to take place and it appears a deep state house cleaning may be on the way.

It is all going to unravel very quickly and many war mongering sins are about to be uncovered.

In January 2010, after less than a year on the job [running military intelligence under Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal in Afghanistan], Mr. Flynn released a paper, “Fixing Intel,” that was highly critical of American intelligence work in Afghanistan.

It bluntly stated that “the U.S. intelligence community is only marginally relevant to the overall strategy,” and said that it had only itself to blame because it had failed to understand Afghanistan’s cultural complexities.

The paper was widely praised in defense circles as insightful. But at the C.I.A., officials were furious at what they saw as a direct attack on the aptitude and professionalism of the roughly 1,000 agency personnel who were serving in Afghanistan at the time.

They were also incensed at the timing of the paper, which became public five days after a suicide attack that killed seven C.I.A. officers at a base in eastern Afghanistan. Mr. Flynn’s searing critique was seen at the agency as the height of insensitivity.

Mr. Flynn has been unapologetic about his views of not only the C.I.A. but other national security agencies, including the D.I.A. under his leadership.

“They’ve really been lying to the American public,” he said in the interview, referring to the Obama administration and much of the national security and intelligence establishment.

“The Department of Defense and those of us that have allowed this sort of a happy talk — ‘We’re moving in the right direction, things are working.’ It’s not. The Taliban are going to come back into power, or ISIS is going to come back into power.”

How The Afghanistan Papers Came To Light…

The path to The Afghanistan Papers started with Michael Flynn.

In the summer of 2016, as the retired Army general became renowned for his fervent support of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, The Washington Post received a tip that Flynn had given a lengthy unpublished interview railing about the war in Afghanistan.

Flynn had granted the interview to staffers from the Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) as part of its Lessons Learned project. The general had served in the war zone as chief of military intelligence and carried a reputation for speaking his mind. What did he have to say about the longest armed conflict in American history? It seemed like something the public ought to know.

On Aug. 24, 2016, The Post filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for a transcript, recordings and other documents from Flynn’s interview. At first, SIGAR staffers were helpful and indicated the records might be released in a few weeks.

Then, on Nov. 8, Trump won the election. Afterward, lawyers for SIGAR would not respond to a reporter’s phone calls and emails. A SIGAR spokeswoman complained she was being kept in the dark by her own agency’s attorneys. “I’m sorry, I’m as frustrated as you by the walls I’ve been hitting,” Jennifer George-Nichol said in an email to a Post reporter.

Weeks passed. On Jan. 24, 2017, Trump announced that Flynn would serve as his national security adviser — a highly influential White House job.

The next day, SIGAR finally reached a decision in The Post’s four-month-old FOIA case. It denied the request for Flynn’s interview materials, citing an exemption in the law that protects government records generated during the “deliberative process.” It did not elaborate.

The denial escalated into a three-year public records battle between The Post and SIGAR that continues to this day.

The fight over the Afghanistan interviews has not set any legal precedents, unlike the Pentagon Papers, the landmark 1971 case in which the Supreme Court upheld the press’s right to publish a secret government study of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. But the two cases share a common theme — a challenge to the government’s attempts to conceal the truth about strategic failures in a faraway war.

The Post’s efforts to obtain the Afghanistan documents also illustrate how difficult it can be for journalists — or any citizen — to pry public information from the government.

The purpose of FOIA is to open up federal agencies to public scrutiny. But officials determined to thwart the spirit of the law can drag out requests for years, hoping requesters will eventually give up.

After SIGAR refused to disclose the Flynn interview records, The Post filed an appeal with the agency, arguing that the denial was legally unjustified and “ultimately harms the public interest.”

The Post also doubled down: In March 2017, it submitted another FOIA request — this time for hundreds of interviews that the inspector general’s staff was believed to have conducted with other key figures in the Afghan war.
